As all the candy at the stores begins to go on sale before and after Halloween please think of our class for donations for small treats. Students always enjoy a little piece of candy here or there and any of these donations would always be appreciated. Topics this week: Reading: We will continue reading our chapter books, which the students are really enjoying! Some groups are starting to finish their books and they will take a quick reading comprehension quiz personalized to their book! Then we will meet as a group to choose their next book club book. In reading we will also be comparing and contrasting elements of poetry and drama. Students have a packet to to along with poetry and we will be making many notes to help students better practice and understand the elements of poetry and drama. Writing: We will start generating ideas for our opinion essays. We will also learn how to write an introduction paragraph and implement these skills in our own essays. Students will be learning about progressive verbs and ACC students will be also learning about perfect tense verbs. However, before all of this we had to take a step back and review verbs all together. Please practice identifying verbs that are going on in your every day lives. Reminders:

Can you believe quarter one is over? Report cards will be coming home this week! It's now time for QUARTER TWO! Topics this week: Reading: We will continue reading our book club books, which the students are really enjoying! Some groups are nearing the end of their books. They will begin taking mini personalized assessments based on their books. We are finishing up point of view and will have a quiz by the end of the week. We will also begin our drama, poetry, and prose unit. Writing: Last week, we reviewed the TEACH strategy. This strategy is used when answering a constructed response question (fancy for short answer!) This week we will be starting our unit on opinion writing. We will begin the unit by taking a close look at the rubric which we will use to grade our writing. Students will evaluate what they need to do in their writing to do their best in the beginning which will help as they are writing their essays. In grammar we will start working on progressive verb tenses and will move into linking and helping verbs. Reminders: Picture Retakes: Wednesday, October 17th October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Join us as we honor those affected by the disease and support the progress being made in the fight against breast cancer. We are encouraging students to donate $1.00 and wear pink on Friday, October 19th. Thank you for your help and support towards the American Cancer Society and Team Dolvin Relay for Life! #WeRelaywhatsyourSuperpower Donate new socks to our SOCKTOBER challenge! On October 15th, students can begin to bring in pairs of new, unused socks to donate to the homeless shelter. Their teacher will collect them and fill in a class graph to keep track of their donations! We appreciate your help with this! Just think of all the warm feet walking around Atlanta this winter! Please send in your new socks by Oct. 31st. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me! Have a great week! I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend! I am hoping we will get to enjoy some fall weather here shortly! TOPICS: Reading: This week we will begin point of view. Most students may remember learning about this topic last year. We will be digging in deep and discussing the points of view in our book clubs and comparing and contrasting first and third person point of view. Writing: We will be working on responding to a constructive response question. We will practice how to use the TEACH strategy (notes are on Google classroom and our website) to answer these questions. In grammar we will be reviewing how to use quotation marks for dialogue and quoting evidence from the text. We will also review dictionary & thesaurus skills this week, making sure to practice how to use digital tools to help practice these skills. Reminders:

I'm sure you all are very excited for the short week and long weekend ahead! As we approach the end of the nine weeks the homework this week will be completing any missing assignments your child has in my class. I will be sharing this information with your child and if they have been working hard to complete classwork and homework assignments all along this year they will have this week off. Instead, they can enjoy the beautiful weather OR complete any review Nearpods located on our class webpage. However, these is completely optional! Here is the plan for the upcoming week:
