January 28 - February 1Dear Parents,
Happy "Snow Day!" I hope you are all enjoying your day off and hopefully we will see you back at school tomorrow! I was at a training yesterday and I can't believe we are out today! Topics this week: Reading: We are continuing to create goals, read uninterruptedly in class, and answer questions with our book club books! Thank you so much for supporting your child's love of reading by talking with them about their book selection. We will be starting our Informational Reading unit this week. We are starting this unit off by asking students what they already know about informational reading and what they hope to accomplish this unit. Our goal is to personalize learning by co-planning the unit with the kids. Writing: We will also be starting informational writing. We will start by learning how organize our ideas and then write a good informational introduction paragraph. This week we will review synonyms and antonyms as we dig into reading informational texts. **Since I was at a training on Monday and we have no school today, please have your child hold off on homework until we are all back together again.** Reminders:
That's all for now! Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns by emailing me directly at [email protected]. Have a wonderful week & stay warm! I hope you all enjoyed the LONG weekend. Here is one of my favorite Martin Luther King Jr. Quotes: "The time is always right to do what is right." My hope and dream is to make a positive impact on your child. If that means that they learn to love reading, they learn how to improve their writing, or even how to be a little kinder, then they are growing in a positive way! Remember, if you ever need any extra assistance, please feel free to reach out to me by email. Topics this week: Reading: We are continuing to create goals, read uninterruptedly in class, and answer questions with our book club books! Thank you so much for supporting your child's love of reading by talking with them about their book selection. This week we will be reviewing comparing themes, topics, and pattern of events in pieces of literature, specifically myths. We will also review how to determine the allusions behind myths. We have discussed what it means to open up Pandora's Box, what it means to work on a Herculean Task, what our Achilles Heel might be, going on a long Odysseus journey, how some people have the Midas/Golden Touch, and what a Trojan Horse is referring to when used in literature. I will hand out a review to the students this week and they have notes in the reading tab of their binders. We will have a test on this material on Friday. Writing: We will be reviewing their two Write Score Opinion Essays. Write Score has given each student feedback on their essays and students will take the time to compare their two essays, make corrections, and reflect on how they can improve. Next week we will begin Information writing. We will continuing learning about relative pronouns and relative adverbs in grammar this week. A practice homework assignment is being sent home as homework this week! Reminders:

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful break. We took the kids to Disney World for Kyle's 2nd birthday, the beach, and spent a lot of time reorganizing the house. I hope you enjoyed your time off as well! It was a nice break but I was so happy to see the kids smiling faces as we began the third nine weeks today! Topics this week: Reading: We will review where we left off in our book club books! Thank you so much for supporting your child's love of reading by helping them find a copy of their book. We will continue working on comparing themes, topics, and pattern of events in pieces of literature. We will then relate this back to myths, legends, folktales, and fables. This week we are going to read and listen to the story of Pandora's Box and determine the allusions behind what it means to "open up Pandora's box." Please feel free to use this vocabulary in language at home as well. Writing: We will be reviewing the scores from their two Write Score Opinion Essays. Write Score has given each student feedback on their essays and students will take the time to compare their two essays, make corrections, and reflect/set goals on how they can improve as writers this nine weeks.
